This book is the kind of book you will read in one sitting.

“The Peculiar Life of a Lonely Postman” by Denis Thériault was in my “to-read” list for some time, after I caught a glimpse of it on the internet. The story looked interesting, although at the time I didn’t put much thought into it. Then, one day, I found a cheap copy at a local bookstore, and finally bought it.

I wasn’t prepared to get attached to it! I began reading and only stopped after the final word. I read it in one sitting (the book isn’t long, but it’s really interesting, the kind of book you just can’t pull away from.) It surprised me; I never expected to like it that much.

Bilodo, the postman, does something that many of us, in our curious nature, sometimes wonder: he reads people’s correspondenc, and particularly the letters exchanged by Ségolène and Grandpré (who had a fondness for poetry). Then, Bilodo falls in love with Ségolène. And then, Bilodo witnesses Grandpré’s death. So he decides to start pretending to be Grandpré, trying to write like him, sending and receiving letters to and from Ségolène. The postman makes some changes in his life because he believes that in order to write like Grandpré, he must become Grandpré. This leads to a series of misunderstandings, and he loses the touch with reality.

“The Peculiar Life of a Lonely Postman” is, no doubt, one of my top 3 favourite books. Like I said, the story isn’t long (165 pages, more or less),and it’s well-written, enthralling, and just as Bilodo fell in love with Ségolène, I fell in love with this story.
